Project of training Border Police officers, funded by UK completed successfully

In cooperation with the UK General Consulate in Erbil, the European Technology and Training Center (ETTC) trained policemen from KRG in several fields that deal with securing borders. The main aim of this assistance is to maintain the stable security situation in Iraqi Kurdistan through improving the border security in KRG regarding irregular migration and trafficking supported by criminal networks. The project, however, is not only geared towards short-term improvements in police capabilities, but in the future will enable the educated to give such seminars themselves.

In a period of one month, from December 03, 2017 until February 08, 2018, nine seminars with different contents took place. Within this period, 184 representatives of the Ministries of Interior in Erbil and Sulaimaniya were trained, among them 23 women and 161 men of the Bureau of Migration and Displacements, the General Directorate of Residency, the Directorate of Passport and the Airport Residency Offices in Erbil and Sulaimaniya.

On a theoretical basis the lecturers introduced relevant topics to the audience in Erbil and Sulaimaniya, such as “International Development in International Migration Law”, “International Human Right Law, Human Trafficking and Role Of Police” and “International Humanitarian Law about migrants and Refugees in Kurdistan Region”.

Regarding the everyday work experiences and challenges of the Kurdish security forces in Erbil as well as in Sulaimaniya, also practical seminars were held. Beside a site visit of the Directorate of Criminal Evidences, training events with titles like “How to Investigate with suspicious cases”, “How to Identify and Recognize Forged Documents.” or “Camp Management”, enabled the visitors to be better prepared for the daily routine.

In summary, one can say that all events had a lively participation from a total of 31 different institutions that belong to the Ministries of Interior in Erbil as well as in Sulaimaniya. The 184 participants of the courses give an optimistic view that the work of the domestic authorities with regard to the protection of borders will continue to be maintained even more effectively. For the future, it is expected that the security forces from nowadays will pass on their knowledge in order to guarantee a safe future for KRG as well as to make the daily working life more comfortable and efficient for future generations.

Humanitarian Aid for IDPs in Kurdistan, Donated by the German General Consulate in Erbi

The General German Consulate in Erbil, across its different support and help projects in Kurdistan Region, has a big contribution in Humanitarian Aid for the Refugees and IDPs located in Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

General German Consulate in Erbil and the ETTC has decided to provide a Humanitarian Project in Erbil by providing Solar Generators in order to let the IDPs and Refugees have an alternative power supply for their daily uses. The purpose of the project is to provide Solar Generators to the IDP families who are living in the mountain areas in Iraqi Kurdistan Region in order to use it for lightening and recharging devices with USB-port charging.

The funded project by the German General Consulate has targeted around 399 IDP families located in the mountain areas in Erbil province and have been provided by Solar Generators and Solar light chargers. The project objectives have been achieved successfully and the main goal of the project is realised as well. This kind of support has different impacts and benefits in the country as Kurdistan region has a big gap in the electricity supply for years. And the lack of the Electricity power in the region made these families mostly remain without sustainable electricity therefore such alternative is highly appreciated by the IDP families and the local government as well because it will help to reduce the pressure of the electricity supply on the government. The monitoring and evaluation team could realise that the distributed product has a good benefit for these families as they can use it every day and it has a long term impact as these generators could work for years.

The IDP families were grateful and appreciative for such humanitarian aid by the German General Consulate and the European Technology and Training Centre. They expect more supports and aid from the German people and the European communities.
